Word Lantern and Harvest Pairs Tips for Longer Runs
Tips for Word Lantern and Harvest Pairs: saving lanterns, using Hint and Shuffle well, remembering cards faster and banking spare seconds.
Word Lantern and Harvest Pairs are the two calmer games on Basketheight. One tests your vocabulary, the other your memory, and both reward patience more than speed. This guide covers how each game works and the habits that help you go further in a single run.
Word Lantern: how it works
In Word Lantern, you unscramble words of 4 to 7 letters. The word length grows every three puzzles, so the run gets gradually harder. A few rules are worth knowing:
- You have 3 lanterns, which work as lives.
- Skip moves you to the next puzzle but costs a lantern.
- Wrong full guesses cost nothing, so you can try as many words as you like.
- Each puzzle has one Hint, which reveals the next letter.
- Shuffle reorders the letter tiles.
- Any valid word using the same letters is accepted, not just one specific answer.
Word Lantern milestones each pay once:
- Solve 10 words total: 200 points
- Solve 15 in one run: 1,500 points
- Solve 100 words total: 2,500 points
Word Lantern tips
Since wrong guesses are free and lanterns are precious, the whole game is about never skipping unless you truly must:
- Guess freely. If a word might be right, try it. There's no penalty.
- Shuffle often. A new arrangement can make a word jump out. It's free, so use it whenever you feel stuck.
- Look for common endings. Try building around familiar endings like -ING, -ED, -ER or -LY, and common starts like RE- or UN-.
- Use your Hint before you Skip. One revealed letter is often enough to crack the word, and it keeps your lantern safe.
- Remember other words count. If you spot a different valid word with the same letters, enter it.
Harvest Pairs: how it works
Harvest Pairs is a memory match game. Flip cards two at a time to find matching pairs and clear the board. The levels grow as you go:
- Level 1 has 6 pairs, then 8, then 10, up to a maximum of 12 pairs.
- Each level's timer is 30 seconds plus 5 seconds per pair.
- Half your leftover seconds (up to 20) carry over to the next level.
- The run ends when time runs out.
Harvest Pairs milestones each pay once:
- Clear 3 levels in one run: 400 points
- Clear 20 levels total: 1,500 points
- Clear 8 levels in one run: 5,200 points
As a worked example, the first level has 6 pairs, so its timer is 30 + (5 × 6) = 60 seconds. If you finish with 24 seconds left, half of that, 12 seconds, carries over to level two.
Harvest Pairs tips
Speed matters, but memory matters more. Each wasted flip costs time:
- Flip systematically. Work across the board row by row early on, so you know which cards you've already seen.
- Say it in your head. Silently naming each card as you see it (along with where it sits) helps it stick.
- Match known pairs first. When you flip a card you've seen before, go straight to its partner.
- Don't rush the first flips. Pausing a moment to remember the board saves more time than fast, random flipping.
- Bank your seconds. Finishing early carries extra time forward, up to 20 seconds, which gives you breathing room on the bigger boards.
Using these games for your dailies
Both games are good choices for daily tasks. A relaxed Word Lantern run or a couple of Harvest Pairs levels can easily last 30 seconds or more, which counts toward "Play a game today." Play both on the same day as one other game, and you've finished the game sampler too. Our levels and streaks guide explains how those rewards add up.
